Ile de Goree is the site of fortifications dating back to the 16th Century. The Portugeuse were the first Europeans to hold sway over the inhabitants of this part of West Africa. Later came the French. Today the island, and much of its former military infrastructure, is home to a vibrant artist colony. A stark contrast indeed!
